The Story of Fixed by Fitness

The personal training industry is interesting. Unlike nearly every other health and wellness profession, the barrier for entry into personal training is relatively low.

You don’t need to step into a classroom or even in a gym to get certified. No formal education or any hands-on instruction is required. Take some online courses, do some studying, pass the test and BOOM! you’re a certified personal trainer (CPT).

The low barrier to entry results in a few things:

1) there are a lot of bad trainers out there (sorry, but it’s true)

2) the average length of a personal trainer’s career is measured in months, not years

3) many CPTs only know how to train their clients like they train themselves

Don’t get me wrong, there are many well-educated, highly skilled trainers out there. They're just not always easy to find. Fortunately, I was part of a team that bucked that list of traits above.

At 24 Hour Fitness: William Cannon in the early 2010s, there was a hotbed of CPT talent. Looking back, it really was amazing. We were consistently the top personal training team in the entire 24 Hour Fitness brand of over 400 gyms. We had awesome trainers who specialized in nearly everything - corrective exercise, Olympic lifting, HIIT, senior specialists - you name it.

Flash forward to today and I can count at least six businesses that have resulted from the trainers who made that gym special.

Fixed by Fitness is one of them.

Prior to joining the William Cannon team, I’d been exclusively around the type of trainers I described at the top of this blog. Now I’d seen the other side; I saw the environment a team of great trainers was capable of creating. It was a fun place to work and to train at. I want to recreate that greatness...and then make it even better. I want our clients to be so happy with their training that they can't help but tell everyone they know about it.

Over the years I’ve trained everyone from pre-teens to great-grandparents, with goals from doing physique shows to being able to walk up stairs again. Eventually, I found myself working primarily with people in what I now refer to as the lifestyle fitness niche (some would call this gen pop, or general population).

My clients want to work out to reduce their aches and pains, increase their energy, decrease their injury risk, feel healthier, get stronger, move better and have fewer “I feel old” moments. I just so happened to share this in common with two of my good friends from my 24 Hour Fitness days - Mike Lienau and Jacob Rios.

So I started FXF because I have a clear vision of creating a training studio where we’re known for having great trainers who help their clients live their best lives. We're not the go-to place for group fitness, or Crossfit, or triathlon training, or Olympic lifting, etc. But we are the go-to place for top-tier personal training.

And thankfully, Mike and Jacob - two of the best trainers I've ever been around - share that same vision and agreed to come aboard.

Now, why the name Fixed by Fitness?

I just listened to my clients.

Over the years, I’ve been told a laundry list of things that have been fixed by training: all types of joint and muscle pain, lack of strength, postural issues, poor energy levels, being overweight, lack of confidence, etc. So really, the name found me.
